Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
This course aims at acquiring a basic understanding of the American legal system together with its societal and cultural background.
This course will start with learning the American governing system - legislative branch, President, and judicial branch- and students will understand Federalism where the federal government, as well as state governments, hold sovereignty. Then it will go on to discuss the process of realization of law. Specifically, students will learn common law system through the analysis of the development of products liability law and also learn the unique features of American civil and criminal procedure. In the last part, the classes will focus on two kinds of human rights protection, equal protection and substantive due process under the Bill of Rights.
In each class, the lecturer will pick up representative judgments and aim at delivering vivid images and of the features and dynamism of American law. Thus, students are expected to read assigned cases in advance and participate in classes actively.
