Outline (in English)

This lecture covers the domestic affairs and diplomacy of Japan in the Showa period.
Congress and the military as well as the economic circle and the media influenced the formulation of foreign policy and diplomatic negotiations. How did the Ministry of Foreign Affairs act before the Sino-Japanese War? How did diplomats' recognition and techniques influence Japanese diplomacy? We will think about the possibility of diplomacy in the era of war.
The goals of this course are to learn how to read the archives on domestic and foreign policy and understand the path that modern Japan has taken. Students will also understand the characteristics of diplomacy, the relationship between domestic and foreign policy, and the various factors that influence foreign policy.
Students will be expected to read the assigned reference books before and after class meetings. It is important to review the distributed historical materials. Your study time will be more than four hours for a class.
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following :
Term-end examination: 50%、Short reports :30%、in class contribution: 20%.
