Outline (in English)

Students learn to carry to a higher level the skillful analysis of language and text, by (participating in) close reading of Edgar Allan Poe's gothic fiction and "tales of ratiocination." Students also obtain knowledge about literary gothicism and about its developments.
[Objective] The principal objective of this class is to obtain a historical perspective of "mystery" in American literature, mainly through the consideration of tales by Edgar Allan Poe, who, while a gothic story-teller, originated the genres of science fiction and detective fiction.
[Learning activities outside of classroom:] Before/after each class meeting, students are expected to spend 2 hours respectively to understand the course content.
[Grading Criteria/Policies:] Overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following: in-class contribution [positive participation] (30%),final report [paper] (70%).
