Outline (in English)

[Objective] This lecture tries to consider several literary topics through reading closely Jean Webster's novel Daddy-Long-Legs (1912). Students will learn and think about the American-vernacular style; the narrative point of view; the "time" in narrative; literary allusions and quotations; symbolism of space; genres of bildungsroman and epistolary novel; English versification, and several kinds of "background" knowledge.
[Learning activities outside of classroom:] Before/after each class meeting, students are expected to spend 2 hours respectively to understand the course content.
[Grading Criteria/Policies:] Overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following: in-class contribution [positive participation] (30%),final examination (70%).
