Outline (in English)
Course Outline: This class deals with issues in the field of Japanology (Japanese studies) in the post-war era, especially in connection with Ruth Benedict's The Chrysanthemum and the Sword (1946). After initial lectures on the content of Benedict's book, students participate in one of three presentations on Benedict's discussion and understanding of the Japanese concepts of on (Chapters 5 & 6), giri (Chapters 7 & 8), and haji (Chapter 10). Other topics of lectures given by the instructor include the Nihonjinron (studies of the Japanese) of the 1960s and 1970s, criticisms of these studies in succeeding decades, and trends in the translation of Japanese classical literature in the post-war era. The class uses many sources written in English; existing Japanese translations are provided, and often commented on, by the instructor.
Learning Objectives: Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the elements of Benedict's book that had a particularly strong influence on the development of Nihonjinron and Japanese cultural studies within Japan in the second half of the 20th century, will learn how to view these objectively and critically, and will also gain an understanding of international reception of Japanese literature, focusing on its classical genres.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Students must prepare their presentations, deliver them, and write them up as their final report. Sections of the textbook are required reading for certain classes; other materials for required reading are distributed electronically prior to the class in which they are dealt with.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Reaction paper (submitted after each class) 35%; participation in presentation and discussion 25%; final written report 40%.

秋学期は第二次世界大戦後間もなく、アメリカ合衆国の文化人類学者のルース・ベネディクトによって書かれたThe Chrysanthemum and the Sword（菊と刀、1946）と、それが引き起こした議論を取り上げます。後年特に注目された「恩」「義理」「恥」に関する章を、学生グループのプレゼンテーションを交えながら詳しく検討します。その他、1960年代以降の日本人論・日本文化論や、それに対する批判をみていきます。また、日本文学の国際的な広がりについても考えます。
到達目標Goal
・「文化の型」という見方で20世紀前半の日本を捉えたThe Chrysanthemum and the Swordの中で、後年特に影響が大きかった要素を知る
・戦後、特に1960年代以降に激増した「日本論」「日本人論」「日本文化論」の内容を客観的・批判的に考えることができる
・戦後、日本の文学が世界的に評価されるようになったプロセスを知る

教員による講義が中心ですが、計3回の討論会（授業第5・9・12回）で、複数の学生グループによるプレゼンテーションと議論を行います。履修者は、プレゼンテーションに必ず１回参加するとともに、議論にも参加します。授業第1〜3回にプレゼンテーション打合せ・相談のための時間を設けます。毎回リアクション・ペーパーを提出してもらいます。授業の冒頭、前回の授業で提出されたリアクション・ペーパーからいくつか取り上げ、フィードバックを行います。

昨年度、各自のプレゼンテーションが長くなり、討論が十分できないことがあったので、予め時間配分を決めることにしたいと思います。
その他の重要事項Others
担当教員は英語を母語とするオーストラリア人ですが、本講義では元々英語で書かれた文章も原則として和訳で読むので、英語の読解力はあまり問題になりません。ただし、プレゼンテーションのために敢えて英文も読んでみたい学生のためには原文を用意し、読解の指導もします。日本文学科の学生のみならず、哲学科、英文学科、史学科などの学生の履修も歓迎します。
