Outline (in English)

Course Outline: This lecture course is about Kanadehon Chūshingura (The Treasury of Loyal Retainers) and derivative works. The historical incident of the revenge of the forty-seven rōnin of Akō is widely known, and was adapted for the stage from early on. One of the most successful stage productions was Kanadehon Chūshingura. Originally a puppet play (ningyō jōruri), it was soon performed on the kabuki stage, and many derivative works were born in various other genres. This trend has continued to the present day, and many novels, TV dramas, and movies have been produced on the same theme.
Learning Objectives: At the completion of this course, students will:
1. understand the characteristics of the ningyō jōruri and kabuki versions of Kanadehon Chūshingura;
2. will be able to analyze works derived from Kanadehon Chūshin- gura;
3. will have learned how to enjoy and savor ningyō jōruri, kabuki, ukiyoe, early modern novels, rakugo, etc.
4. will understand the evolution of Chūshingura as a cultural phenomenon, which still retains its relevance today.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Students are required to read the handouts and use them for preparation and review. About 4 assignments are to be done outside of class. Before each class meeting, students will be expected to spend 1 hour to understand the course content. The standard learning and review time after each class is 3 hours.
