Outline (in English)

Course Outline: The theme of this lecture course is “The Tale of Genji and Modern Writers.” We will examine how novelists and essayists of the 20th century translated The Tale of Genji and modified it as they did so.
Learning Objectives: The goals of the course are the following two points:
- understanding the issues of The Tale of Genji; and
- understanding the translation methods and creative techniques of the authors.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Students will be expected to read the books introduced in class. Preparation and review time will be 2 hours for each class.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Grading will be based on a final report (72%), and reaction papers for each session (28%).
