Outline (in English)

Course Outline: In this class, we will read Genji monogatari (The Tale of Genji) by Murasaki Shikibu. Since the story is long, we will focus on the first half of the life of the main character, Hikaru Genji: a story of overcoming setbacks and attaining glory. By carefully reading famous scenes of this work, we will discover what this great work of literature accomplished, the power of its excellent expression and ingenuity, and how it has managed to captivate people throughout the ages.
Learning Objectives: The goals of this lecture course are for students: (1) to understand the literary achievement and historical significance of The Tale of Genji by experiencing its expressions and learning about the world of the tale; and (2) to deepen their understanding of ancient language and grammar, and broaden their knowledge of the customs and history of the Heian period, which is necessary for reading classical literature.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Before each class, students will be expected to have read the relevant chapters of the text. After each class, students are expected to revise the class content, read the materials related to the lecture content, and complete assignments. These tasks take four hours each week.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Grading will be based on 14 assignments (70%) and a long report (30%).
