Outline (in English)

Course Outline: Amongst other periods in the history of Chinese literature, this lecture course will be focus on the literature and the underlying social background during the Tang dynasty, when there was a particularly strong influence on Japanese literature. As far as Chinese classical literature goes, Tang poetry (the poetry of Li Bai, Du Fu and Bai Juyi) is arguably one of the most familiar genres for the Japanese. Poetry, however, was not the only literary genre of the Tang, and novels called chuan-qi as well as the prose of Han Yu and Liu Zongyuan are particularly noteworthy in the history of Chinese literature. In this course, through reading literary works of various genres from each period during the Tang, we will attain broad knowledge of the diversity of poetry, novels and prose written during the Tang dynasty, their artistry that can be appreciated today, as well as peculiarities that are difficult to understand today.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the course, students will:
A. understanding the outline of Tang-Dynasty literary history;
B. understand the form and content of Tang poetry and the characteristics of novels and prose written in the Tang Dynasty; and

Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content.
