Outline (in English)

Course Outline: Amongst other periods in the history of Chinese literature, this lecture course will focus on the literature and the underlying social background of the most ancient periods, from Pre-Qin to Han, Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern dynasties (i.e., periods before the Tang dynasty). As far as Chinese classical literature goes, Tang poetry (the poetry of Li Bai, Du Fu and Bai Juyi) is arguably one of the most familiar genres for the Japanese, and in this course we will learn about the characteristics of literature of periods prior to the Tang dynasty, which formed the foundation for the creation of Tang poetry.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the course, students will:
A. understand the outline of the history of literature from the Pre-Qin Dynasty to the Northern and Southern Dynasties;
B. have knowledge of the various genres of Chinese literature through reading representative literary works of each period, and at the same time understand the background of Chinese culture, folk customs, and differences with Japanese culture; and
C. have acquired the basic skills necessary to read and comprehend Chinese materials.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Term-end examination (100%)
