Outline (in English)

The course is an introduction for Emmanuel Levinas's major work, "Wholeness and Infinity". Through his unique phenomenology, Levinas criticized the inclination toward "Totality" that defines profoundly Western traditional philosophy, and tried to think about "Infinity" that is not encompassed by it. The purpose of this course is to reread this difficult book, a milestone in the modern theory of "Other", and to deepen our understanding of such basic concepts as other, identity, finitude, subject, and transcendence.
Students will be expected to have completed the required assignments after each class meeting. Your study time will be more than four hours for a class.
Final grade will be calculated according to the following process Mid-term report and in-class contribution (80%), and term-end examination (20%).
