Outline (in English)

The course provides historical background on the relationship between religion and social movements by paying special attention to the Christian religion. It explores the ways that Christianity, along with the other modern ideas and practices such as the Enlightenment, romanticism, social Darwinism, utopianism, socialism, and nationalism, influenced the development of abolitionism, feminism, colonialism/imperialism, labor movements, decolonization movements, and civil rights movements.

By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to: 1) understand the basic concepts and theories that are important in examining the relationship between social movements and Christianity, 2) analyze the relationship between religion and social movements from the perspective of historical consciousness, and 3) conduct a basic historical analysis of social movements based on the ideas of Christianity.

Students will be expected to review each class to: 1) understand the important concepts, theories, and characteristics of social movements, and 2) be able to use the concepts and theories as tools for analysis. In each reaction paper, students may be required to analyze the connection between the movements and the theories that were covered in previous classes.

Students are expected to spend 4 hours per week working on homework, revision, and assignments.

The final grade will be decided by reaction paper (30%) and the final assignment (70%).
