Outline (in English)

This course invites the students to survey the essence of the Japanese language by reading classical texts translated into English. In order to truly discover Japan, it is essential to look for things that are left untranslated.

To appreciate various works spanning across centuries of Japanese classical period, and to demonstrate the findings in forms of written assignments and final paper, will be the objective of this course.

The students are expected to spend a total of 4 hours in reviewing and preparing for each class meeting.

The grading criteria is as follows: 10% participation, 40% mid-term paper, and 50% final paper. Students that successfully achieve 60% or more of course goals will be able to earn a passing grade for the course.
