Outline (in English)

【Course outline】

“Barcelona”, “Gaudí”, “Dalí”, “Barça”, “human towers”… Because of the recent Catalan independence movement, many people have started to relate these words not to Spain, but to Catalonia. However, they are not but the tip of the iceberg of what Catalonia has to offer.

Obviously, one cannot really appreciate Catalonia’s fascinating world without its own language, Catalan. But not only that, since approaching its culture and society also requires it most of the times. Because of this, the main goals of this class are to acquire an elementary knowledge of Catalan, and also to create opportunities to enhance interest in Catalonia’s world.

Finally, Catalan is a language that particularly cannot be isolated from its political and social circumstances, so I would highly recommend you to take “Catalan Culture III (History and Society A” and “Catalan Culture IV (History and Society B” as well.

【Learning Objectives】

1. Acquire an elementary knowledge of Catalan language (CEFR A2 level).
2. Find motivation so as to continue having interest in Catalan and Catalonia’s history, culture and society.

【Learning activities outside of classroom】

It is necessary at least 30 and 60 minutes for preparing and reviewing each class, respectively. However, it is very important to pay heed not only to the “amount” of time, but also to its “quality”. For example, it is essential to avoid distractions and factors that may cause procrastination.
