Outline (in English)

Starting with things that have close relationships with daily living such as language, ceremonies, and clothes, we will enter the world of modern and contemporary China. The purpose of this lesson is to ensure that China, which is often felt far away as a neighbor for the Japanese, becomes more familiar. Some topics taken from Chinese culture will be introduced and explained focusing on their historical background and influence.

At present, the level of trust between Japan and China is far from satisfactory. This lesson will help students to understand the causal relationship between the current situation and Japan-China relations from the reversal of the two countries' positions at the end of the 19th century to the present day. Then, the possibilities of fostering mutual trust between Japan and China will be explored, and the methods of cross-cultural understanding will be learned.

Students are expected to further their own understanding of the content of each assignment by further researching the areas of interest to them. The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.

An essay test will be given in the final session. Students are required to choose one of the six themes studied in class that interests them, research it in depth, and summarize it by themselves. In the examination, students are required to discuss two questions, one on the theme they have researched and one on the theme designated by the instructor. Students are allowed to bring their own materials and handouts from the class.
The final exam (70 points) and the regular exam (30 points for watching the class materials) will be used to evaluate the overall performance of the course.
