Outline (in English)

The aim of this course is to help students understand how the Chinese culture influenced the development of Japanese culture. How kanji, Chinese characters, developed and became a Lingua Franca amongst the Asian countries, how Confucianism was founded and provided an ethical and philosophical doctrine regarding human relationships and social structures for the Asian countries. How Buddhism was introduced to China and spread amongst the Asian countries. Students will also need to consider when paper and printing were invented and how they changed the world. How Chinese Popular literature was born and influenced Japanese literature.
〔Learning Objectives〕
The goals of this course are to understand the cultural history of China and rethink our culture from an East Asian perspective.
〔Learning activities outside of the classroom〕
Before each class, students will be expected to have read the relevant article(s). Required study/preparation time will be four, or more, hours per class.
〔Grading Criteria/Policies〕
Grading will be decided based on reflection essays(80%) and an end of term report(20%).
