Outline (in English)

One cannot fathom the qualities of foreign language and culture without the set of skills nurtured through learning one's native language and culture. In this course, students will read works of literature produced from the late 19th century to the late 20th century while paying attention to how they contribute to the overall uniqueness of the Japanese language.

To survey different works spanning across decades of modern Japan, and to demonstrate the findings in forms of written assignments and final paper, will be the objective of this course.

The students are expected to spend a total of 4 hours in reviewing and preparing for each class meeting.

The grading criteria is as follows: 10% participation, 40% mid-term paper, and 50% final paper. Students that successfully achieve 60% or more of course goals will be able to earn a passing grade for the course.
