Outline (in English)

Why are we sometimes disappointed in movies that are made from literature or would feel disappointed about film adaptation or film as derivative work? This course introduces the fundamentals of reception theory/reader response literary theory as well as the very basis of film studies. It includes theories of derivative work as a film-making concept. For that purposes, the course deals with several combinations of literary works and its filming examples that are made from original literary works.
【Learning Objectives】
・To develop an understanding of a wide range of topics relating to life, culture and society.
・Able to express their own opinions and to write texts of a certain length about themes above, especially about literature, films and its adaptation.
【Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)】
・The standard preparation and revision time for this course is at least two hours each.
・There are prescribed review tasks.
【Grading criteria】
The course will be judged on 100% of ordinary marks (submitted assignments (report) as a result of active participation)
・In addition to the above, students already completed minimum tasks could submit an another report until the final lecture day. It will be included up to 10 % of ordinary marks.
On the basis of this grading system, students who have achieved at least 60% of the objectives of this course will be considered to have passed the course.
