Outline and objectives

English Application is an integrated 4-language skill communication course with a focus on an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or English for Specific Purposes (ESP) content area. We will first view successful presenters. Next we will discuss how and what makes their presentations effective. Finally, students will practice and present in class using an internationally acceptable style.

Goal

The goal of English Application is to give Post-SA students a forum to continue to use and enhance their English Communication skills. The objective of this particular course is to: 1) teach students the difference between domestic Japanese business presentation practices, and international business presentation style, and 2) prepare students to function effectively in an international business environment.

The course will employ lecture and practical exercises to build the skills in a variety of situations. Students will receive feedback and comments on homework assignments and in class activities throughout the term.

Week 1[対面/face to face]:Class Orientation: The Principles of International Presentation
The differences between Japanese and International business presentation styles

Brief English lecture and reading on the differences between Japanese and International business presentation styles. Students take notes, followed by short class discussion and question and answer session.

Week 2[対面/face to face]:Presenting with Yourself Confidence:
The keys to presenting yourself as a confident professional

Brief English lecture on the main ways a presenter can show professional confidence.
Students take notes, followed by class discussion and question and answer session.

Week 3[対面/face to face]:The Three Critical Questions:
The three questions you have to answer BEFORE you do anything else.

Brief English lecture, reading and question and answer session on the three questions a presenter needs to ask before beginning to prepare a presentation. Followed by small group discussions of topics and a written assignment.

Week 4[対面/face to face]:Creating a Powerful and Persuasive Message:
Developing the one point you want your audience to hear and remember

Brief English lecture, reading and question and answer session on what every presenter needs to do: Create a powerful and persuasive message. Followed by small group discussions of the main point for the audience and a written assignment.

Week 5[対面/face to face]:The Structure of a Presentation: How to build an effective presentation

Brief English lecture on effective presentation structure. Followed by small group discussions and a written assignment on outlining a presentation.

Week 6[対面/face to face]:Mid-term Presentation Preparation: Students work on their mid-term presentations

Students discuss and edit their presentation drafts with the advice of the instructor.

Week 7[対面/face to face]:Mid-term Presentations

Individual Student Presentations to the class

Week 8[対面/face to face]:The Principles of Effective Visual Presentation: How to present visually

Brief English lecture on the principles of making effective visual presentations. Students take notes, followed by class discussion, and question and answer session.

Week 9[対面/face to face]:Designing PowerPoint 1 - Working with the Software

Reading, question and answer session, and actual practice working with the standard business presentation software PowerPoint.

Week 10[対面/face to face]:Designing PowerPoint 2 - Text, Color and Composition

Instructor lead discussion, and actual practice working with PowerPoint. Observing both the effective and ineffective use of text, color and composition.

Week 11[対面/face to face]:Using Logic and Emotion to Persuade: The elements of persuading others

Brief English lecture on the concepts of using logic and emotion to persuade others. Students take notes, followed by class discussion, and written assignment.

Week 12[対面/face to face]:Group presentation skills

Brief English lecture on the keys to making effective group presentations. Students take notes, followed by class discussion, and written assignment.

Week 13[対面/face to face]:Developing Your Group Presentation

Students discuss and edit their group presentation drafts with the advice of the instructor.

Week 14[対面/face to face]:Final Group Presentations: Evaluation and Feedback

The standard preparation and review time for this class is four hours per week: 2 hours preparation and 2 hours review.

Grading criteria

20% Homework
20% In class work
30% Midterm Presentation
30% Final Presentation
Based on the grading criteria set by the instructor, students that successfully achieve 60% or more of course goals will be able to earn a passing grade for the course.
