All classes will be student-centered and designed to maximize students' speaking opportunities. Through pair work and group activities, students will learn to converse about such topics as world knowledge, personality traits and travel experiences. Each class period will be divided into five parts: (a) pair work practice of a preassigned conversation, (b) Fact Sheet questions and answers (c) a question-answer session on a specific weekly topic, (d) a news item pair work reading and listening, and (e) a task-based pair work activity. Students' progress in pair work activities will be assessed by short weekly tests. Participation in all speaking exercises is compulsory. Students' attempts to use English to communicate will be regularly monitored in class. 20% of the students' final grade will be based on active class participation.
