Outline and objectives

English Application is an integrated 4-language skill communication course with a focus on an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or English for Specific Purposes (ESP) content area. Students will discuss and examine various cultural issues as well as make presentations on related cultural topics.

Goal

The goal of English Application is to give Post-SA students a forum to continue to use and enhance their English Communication skills. This course explores English related to contemporary social and cultural topics, and offers a forum for students to talk about their experiences abroad and make contrasts and comparisons with life in Japan.

When the university's Action Policy (Conduct Guideline) Level is 2, this class will be conducted online in principle. Details will be communicated via the Learning Managing System.

Students will discuss and examine various cultural issues as well as present on related cultural topics. Students will receive feedback and comments on homework assignments and in class activities throughout the term.

Week 1[オンライン/online]:Class Orientation: Student Selection & Class Overview

Brief English lecture on course content, students’ responsibilities, and grading criteria. Students take notes, followed by short class discussion and written assignment.

Week 2[対面/face to face]:Youth Culture: Examining aspects of youth trends such as tattoos, piercings, selfies, Instagram, social media imprint, etc.

English lecture, and reading on trends in youth culture such as tattoos, piercings, selfies, and various type of social media. Followed by question and answer session, and small group discussions on these trends.

Week 3[対面/face to face]:Youth Employment: Where does the money go?
Youth shopping trends for services and products

English lecture, and reading on youth trends in working styles, and new ways to shop and spend money. Followed by question and answer session, and small group discussions.

Week 4[対面/face to face]:Elderly Trends: Shopping for health, plastic surgery and Internet dating

English lecture, and reading on trends among older people including plastic surgery and internet dating. Followed by question and answer session, and small group discussions.

Week 5[対面/face to face]:Careers and Employment: Working life
What is a career?
Freelancing, temporary, and home business ownership
Research Habits: Conducting group research-different sharing tips

English lecture, reading and small group discussions on new trends in working and career styles. Followed by instructor led discussion on how to conduct group research.

Week 6[対面/face to face]:Alternative Career Tracks: Unusual fields for employment
Outlining of Presentations: Cluster and formal outlining

English lecture, reading and small group discussions on alternative forms of employment. Followed by instructor led discussion on ways to outline a presentation.

Week 7[対面/face to face]:Medical Advances: How medical technology is shaping our world of diseases & viruses
Presentation Tip— Explanation of Structure: Introduction/Body/Conclusion

English lecture, reading and group discussion on the effects of new medical technologies. Followed by instructor led discussion on standard presentation structure and a written assignment.

Week 8[対面/face to face]:Medical Research: Big pharma and how medicine changes our reality
Presentation Tip—Use of Voice and Posture: Voice and body language
dos and don'ts for English public speaking

English lecture, reading and small group discussions on the implications of large-scale for profit medical research. Followed by instructor led discussion on the important things to remember and do when making a presentation.

Week 9[対面/face to face]:Health Issues: Diet considerations for life stages
Presentation Tip—Use of Slides: Slide making dos and don'ts

English lecture, and group discussion on how people diets change at different times during a person’s life. Followed by instructor led discussion on making presentation slides.

Week 10[対面/face to face]:Mental Health Considerations: Overworking, group and relationship stresses
Presentation Tip—Group Work: Making sure group members pull their weigh and the presentation slides are together

English lecture, reading and group discussion on stresses caused by relationship at work. Followed by instructor led discussion on how to make sure all members of a group presentation work well together and a written assignment for group presentation.

Week 11[対面/face to face]:Technology in Our Blood: Technology changes
Uber/Lyft, Yelp/Square, Meet up
Presentation Tip— Final Slide Editing: Run through checklist of questions to ask on the final edit

English lecture, reading and small group discussions on new technologies creating the sharing society. Followed by instructor led discussion and advice on editing a presentation.

Week 12[対面/face to face]:Youth Trend Presentations: Presentations and discussions of youth trend themes

Student Group Presentations on youth trends incorporating vocabulary and concepts covered in previous lectures followed by question and answer session, and group discussion.

Week 13[対面/face to face]:Elderly Presentations: Presentations and discussions of elderly trend themes

Student Group Presentations on elderly trends incorporating vocabulary and concepts covered in previous lectures followed by question and answer session, and group discussion.

Week 14[対面/face to face]:Course Overview Discussions: Discussion of life themes used in the semester

Recap lecture and group discussion of the social and technological themes cover in the semester.

Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)

Homework, blog work, some presentation preparation.
The standard preparation and review time for this class is four hours per week: 2 hours preparation and 2 hours review.

Textbooks

The instructor will provide some course material via handouts, websites, and class blog.

References

An English to English Dictionary is recommended.
This course will also use some online English News and Study Materials.

Grading criteria

75% Ongoing Evaluation (Participation, Discussions, Homework, etc.)
25% Short Presentations
Based on the grading criteria set by the instructor, students that successfully achieve 60% or more of course goals will be able to earn a passing grade for the course.
