Outline and objectives

English Application is an integrated 4 skills communication skills course with a focus on an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or English for Specific Purposes (ESP) content area. This course is an introduction to the concepts and theories of Microeconomics for non-business majors meant to broaden and enhance students’ worldviews and give them the English language tools necessary to deal with readings and conversations commonly found in the business world when English is used.

Goal

The goal of English Application is to give Post-SA students a forum to continue to use and enhance their English Communication skills. This course aims to help students accomplish the following: 1) develop their knowledge of key vocabulary and concepts of economic theory with particular emphasis on microeconomics, 2) understand and be able to explain microeconomic models both verbally and graphically, and 3) analyze how changes in economic factors can affect individuals and entities within the economy.

When the university's Action Policy (Conduct Guideline) Level is 2, this class will be conducted online in principle. Details will be communicated via the Learning Managing System.

1. Students read individual chapters in the book.
2. A teacher-led discussion on the material from each chapter is held.
3. Student-led discussions in small groups covering self-check questions, review questions, and critical thinking questions are held.
4. End of chapter quizzes are taken.
5. Short writing assignments on topics covered in class (though not for every chapter) are given.
6. Student presentations on topics covered in chapters (schedule and class size permitting) are assigned and given.
Students will receive feedback and comments on homework assignments and in class activities throughout the term.

English reading, discussion and written assignment on economic systems.

Week 4[対面/face to face]:Choice in a World of Scarcity: Choice & Budget Constraints/ Production Possibilities Frontier

English reading and lecture on the concepts of scarcity and the choices people and companies must make because of limited budgets.

Week 5[対面/face to face]:Choice in a World of Scarcity: Social Choices & Objections to the Economic Approach

English reading, discussion and written assignment on economic & social choices.

Week 6[対面/face to face]:Demand & Supply: Demand, Supply, & Equilibrium/ Changes to Equilibrium

English reading and lecture on the concepts of supply and demand.

Week 7[対面/face to face]:Demand & Supply: Student Presentations

Students make presentations on real world experiences with demand & supply using vocabulary and concepts covered in previous lectures.

Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)

1. Read the assigned chapters in the book.
2. Complete the assigned self-check & review questions at the end of each chapter.
3. Prepare for regular quizzes after finishing each chapter.
4. Come to class ready to participate actively in each class by reading the material, completing the homework assignments, and ask questions or offer own opinions in English on topics covered in class.
The standard preparation and review time for this class is four hours per week: 2 hours preparation and 2 hours review.

This course will also use some online English News and Study Materials.

Grading criteria

•Homework 15%
•Written Assignments 15%
Based on the grading criteria set by the instructor, students that successfully achieve 60% or more of course goals will be able to earn a passing grade for the course.

Equipment student needs to prepare

Students should bring a digital device to class, such as a computer or ipad so that they can view the material in the textbook, or print out each unit and bring it to class. The textbook should be downloaded so that it can be viewed or accessed easily during class.

Others

Class size is limited to 24 students. If the number of students exceeds the number of seats available, students will be screened based on the level check given in the first class. Students hoping to take the class must attend the first class in order to ensure that they can get a seat. Students who don't attend the 2nd class after attending the 1st will be assumed to have dropped the course. Regular attendance is required to pass the class!
