Outline (in English)

This course aims to introduce students to basic literary theory. As Jonathan Culler, the author of the textbook of the course, explains in his preface, literary theory challenges common sense, and it explores “how meaning is created and human identities take shape.” By the end of the course, students should understand what topics scholars have debated using literary theory, and learn to apply it to contemporary literary and artistic works, as well as cultural and social phenomena.
Students are expected to come to each class meeting well prepared by reading the assigned part of the textbook and doing the worksheet, given online, in advance. At the end of each class meeting, students are required to write a reflection paper.
The required study time is about four hours per class.
The overall grade will be decided based on worksheets and reflection papers (60%) and the end-term examination (40%).
