Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
"The formation of mercantilism in Europe"
To begin with, this lecture gives students basic knowledge about the economic development of sixteenth-and seventeenth-century Europe as historical context. Then, it introduces major theorists of social and economic thought of that time.
In the seventeenth century England underwent internal and external upheavals such as the Union of the Crowns, the Wars of the Three Kingdoms (the Puritan Revolution), the Restoration and the Glorious Revolution. On the other hand, France established an absolute monarchy under the reign of Louis XIV with the help of Mazarin and Colbert. These two kingdoms were to get into economic and military contest for commercial
supremacy. Against this backdrop, intellectuals discussed questions such as “what is the strength of nation?” and “what regime brings economic prosperity?". In replying to them, mercantilism was to be formed.
【Learning Objectives】
At the end of the course, students are expected to understand the historical formation of economic perspectives in the political and economic situations of the seventeenth-century England and France and regional characteristics of Europe.
