Outline (in English)

[Course outline]
The lecture introduces the trajectory of China's economic growth from a historical and macroeconomic perspectives, the pattern of the transition from a planned economy to a socialist market economy, and the facts and problems of the modern Chinese economy. We will understand the factors behind China's economic growth from different sides (e.g., history, institutions and policies, economic development, and transition) and clarify the position of the Chinese economy and the features of Chinese economic growth in comparison with developed countries such as Japan, the United States, and European countries.
[Learning Objectives]
The goal is to understand the situations and issues in Chinese economy from macro-economic perspective, and to acquire the academic ability to explain the factors and issues of Chinese economic growth based on the theories in economics and the data from Chinese government statistical data source and many kinds of academic surveys.

[Learning activities outside of classroom]
Students who have not taken other courses related to the Chinese economy (e.g., development economics, macroeconomics, economic policy, etc.) should read the textbooks or introductions on those courses in advance. Download the learning materials in advance through the learning support system (Hoppii) and understand the content of each lesson. The standard time for preparation and review for each lesson is 2 hours each.

1. Regular performance and homework (70%)
2. Final examination (30%)
