Outline (in English)

<Course outline>
This course aims to explore history of empires in comparative perspectives. It pays particular attention on empires in China, Japan and Britain.
<Learning objectives>
1) Students are able to acquire basic knowledge about empires in history.
2) Students are able to analyze history in comparative perspectives.
<Learning activities outside of classroom>
Students have to spend at least two hours on preparation for and review of each class respectively. They are expected to read relevant books, such as those listed in the reference section, and learn by themselves. They also have to work on assignments given by the instructor.
<Grading policy>
Class participation and assignments: 50% Final examination: 50%
