Outline (in English)

<Course outline>
This course examines poverty and welfare in modern and contemporary British history. It covers various topics including system and ideology of poor relief and welfare, charity and philanthropy, mutual aid of ordinary people, makeshift economy, and so on.
<Learning objectives>
1) Students are able to acquire basic knowledge about poverty and welfare in modern and contemporary British history.
2) Students are able to acquire critical views on poverty and welfare in contemporary world in reference to history.
<Learning activities outside of classroom>
Students have to spend at least two hours on preparation for and review of each class respectively. They are expected to read relevant books, such as those listed in the reference section, and learn by themselves. They also have to work on assignments given by the instructor.
<Grading policy>
Class participation and assignments: 50% Final examination: 50%
