Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
In this course,we will study the initial process of the formation of "Islam" as we know it today. We will start from the ancient Mediterranean world, through the emergence of the Prophet Muhammad in the Arabian Peninsula, the development of the Middle East, and the division of the region, to the completion of "Islam".

【Learning Objectives】
At the end of this course, students are expected to form their own understanding of the creation and development of Islam, including its historical background, and to be able to present their understanding in writing to others.

【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Additional references will be introduced in the handouts distributed each class, and key words related to the contents of the next session will be indicated. Reading through the references and reviewing the submitted papers will serve as review. And researching the key words in the next lecture will serve as preparatory study.
The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.

【Grading Criteria /Policies】
Papers to be submitted each class (50%), final exam (50%)
The papers will be graded based on the cumulative score.
The final exam will be an essay exam. Both the papers and the exam will be about each student's views. Students will be graded on the basis of their own views and interpretations, and on their ability to present them logically in writing.
