Outline (in English)
This class focuses on the representation of the British Empire in literature and films. We will analyze the foundational values of British imperialism and how they changed and were critiqued over the course of the twentieth century. Students are expected to review course materials every week and turn in every assignment. Grades will be determined based on weekly responses (30%) and the final exam (70%).

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
「帝国」をテーマに、19世紀末から20世紀にかけてのイギリス文学・映画を読み解く。イギリス帝国主義の根底にある進歩主義や異文化への偏見が作品でどう描かれ、二つの世界大戦を経てどう変化していくのか。授業の後半では、イギリス統治下のアイルランドと南アフリカについても学ぶ。

歴史的文脈・文化的文脈の中で作品を読む力をつける。文学・映画批評を通して、イギリス文化・社会について学ぶ。

コロナの感染状況と授業内容に配慮しながら、対面授業と遠隔授業を併用する。パワーポイントを使った講義を中心に授業を進める。毎回リアクションペーパーを書く。授業の初めに、前回の授業で提出されたリアクションペーパーからいくつか取り上げ、全体に対してフィードバックを行う。

授業の予習復習をする。中間・期末テストのためにもこまめに歴史背景・文化背景を調べる。
本授業の準備・復習時間は、各2時間を標準とします。
