Outline (in English)

This course deals with the basic concepts and principles of premodern Japanese archives. It also enhances the development of student's skill in decipherment of cursive-style writing.
The goals of this course are to understand the premodern organizational structure of shogunate and the imperial court, villages and towns.In addition, we will explore the characteristics of record management systems for pre-modern organizations.
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content.
Final grade will be calculated according to the following process report (50%) and in-class contribution(50%).
