(Course outline)
This course gives an overview of basic theories with special reference to modern Japanese language, within Cognitive Semantics, as part of the field of Cognitive Linguistics, such as prototypes, construal, viewpoints, focusing, subjectification, and encyclopedic view on meaning. The aim of this class is to help students learn cognitive-semantic analysis to linguistic meaning in Japanese.

(Learning Objectives)
The goals of this course are to understand modern Japanese language from the linguistic perspectives; to understand basic cognitive-semantic concepts; and to apply them to Japanese language.

(Learning activities outside of classroom)
Students will be expected to spend four hours each class on out-of-class preparation by reading the relevant chapter from the textbook and giving brief and/or detailed presentations on it, to understand the course content.

(Grading Criteria /Policy)
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following:
- In-class contribution: 50%
- Short reports: 25%
- Term-end report: 25%
