Outline (in English)

In this course, we will learn various approaches and methods for understanding the development and changes of Japanese society from a global perspective. A global perspective here means researching and analyzing Japanese society through comparison with other countries and regions and exploring transnational connections and linkage between Japan and foreign countries. The course will particularly discuss the following topics for social research - finding a research topic, literature reviews, planning research, and the relationship between theory and data. Also, we will deepen our knowledge about Japan and, at the same time, explore students’ possible dissertation topics through reading books and articles related to issues and problems in Japanese society today.
