Outline (in English)

Compiled in Liang era China, the Wen Xuan is an anthology containing poems that are classified by genre. In China, the Wen Xuan was a must-read for candidates for the imperial examinations, which were examinations for the selection of bureaucrats. The book was read widely in Japan as well and is an important text to explore the historical development of Chinese classical literature.
This course will involve reading poems included in the anthology section of Wen Xuan, vol. 29. The goals are for students to revise the main text and annotations of the book (including old abridged versions preserved in Japan and versions printed in Japan), read the Chinese text in Japanese (kundoku), and create a Japanese translation; to acquire knowledge and skills in philology, especially in textual criticism; and to develop reading comprehension in classical texts written in literary Chinese, including skills in reading Chinese texts in Japanese. A further aim is for students to develop the basic skills in writing academic articles by creating their own annotations to interpret the work and undergo training so that they can present new interpretations by building on previous annotations and translations.
