Outline (in English)

Course Outline: This is a postgraduate seminar in Japanese studies, mainly for students writing their doctoral dissertation under the instructor's supervision. It is also open to students from other seminars who are interested in methodological issues involved in the study of the performing arts of Japan. The class centers on presentations given by students on their research and other related topics. In each class of the academic years 2022-23, we will also read a section or sections from the ‘Kangen-kabu’ (‘Music, Song and Dance’) chapter of Kokon chomon-jū (‘A collection of notable tales old and new’), a collection of historical tales compiled by Tachibana no Narisue in 1254.
Learning Objectives: The primary objective of the class is for the students to successfully complete their dissertations in the stipulated timeframe, while obtaining the methodological skills to do so, as well as to continue research in the future if they so desire.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Students are expected to undertake the activities necessary for successful completion of their dissertations, and participate actively in our reading of the source text described above. The latter will require some hours of library work each week.
Grading Criteria/Policy: 50% for preparation of materials used in class: 50% for active participation in class discussion.
