Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
In this class we study about the linguistic expressions of Japanese classical literature and the methods of analyzing them. The aim of the class is to improve the skills for reading Japanese classical literature. We try not to neglect any word or phrase in the texts. This class is mainly intended for overseas students.

【Learning Objectives】
The goals of this course are as follows:
1. Students can explain the characteristics found in the expressions of Japanese classical literature, drawing instances from works.
2. Students acquire the methods and attitudes for analyzing the expressions of Japanese classical literature.

【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Before each class meeting, you will be expected to have read the relevant chapter from the text. And after each class meeting, you will be expected to reread your notes, text and handouts. Your study time will be about four hours for a class.

【Grading Criteria /Policy】
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following:
Term-end report: 60%, Works to be submitted: 30%, in-class contribution 10%
