Outline (in English)

We will focus our scrutiny on works of literature by contemporary female authors. After ascertaining Japan’s contemporary gender norms, we will attempt to discern aspects of the interplay. between these norms and women’s literature in line with specific works, reflecting on how the gender of the writer has influenced their works and expressions. In addition, making references as appropriate, we shall work to apprehend the historical course of modern women’s literature. Through these tasks, we seek to provide students with the opportunity to master the perspectives, techniques, and methods for critical reading of women’s literature. In doing so, students will discover and think about challenges that are also relevant to today's society, as well as suggestions for their own research.

By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
In this class, we will take up literary texts by modern female writers and read them carefully. We will review the gender norms of modern Japan, read the aspects of negotiations between those norms and women's literature in line with concrete works, and consider how the writer's gender affects the works and expressions. In addition, we will try to understand the flow of modern women's literature by referring to it as appropriate. Through these tasks, students will acquire perspectives, techniques, and methods for perusing women's literature, and aim to be an opportunity for each student to discover, think, and think about issues that lead to the real world and suggestions for their own research.

Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content.
Before:The reporter investigates and considers the work of the author in charge and prepares a handout. Other students should read the works of the target author, check the necessary items, and summarize their personal opinions.
After:Based on the discussions in the class and the comments of the teacher, deepen the research and consideration of the target work.

Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following
Term-end report : 50%、Presentation content and quality : 30%、in class contribution: 20%
