Outline (in English)

We will carefully read Descartes' Rules for the direction of the mind in French (the original text is in Latin and we will refer to the Latin original as necessary).
The famous "Four Methods" discussed in the Discourse on method II are difficult to understand on their own, and their details can only be understood by reading the Rules.
Through a close reading of this book, we will try to understand what the young Descartes aimed at, what kind of research resulted in it, and why this book was left unfinished. In other words, we aim to deepen our understanding of the early Cartesian philosophy until Discourse by considering the scope and the accomplishment of the early Cartesian epistemology, as well as its limit.
Students are expected by the end of the course to understand, translate and explain by themselves Descartes’ text in French and its background thoughts, to construct their arguments logically through readings and discussions, and to search by themselves for issues and themes they will address in their own arguments and thesis.
Before each class meeting, students are to read, translate and interpret carefully the relevant text of the next class and to consider the arguments of the text and its possible background sources and thoughts. Students in charge of presentation of the day are to prepare a resume of translation and arguments to be distributed. Required study time is two hours each before and after the class.
Grade will be decided on the following proportion. Presentation: 40%, In-class contribution: 25%, Report: 35% (if no report is assigned, Presentation: 65% & In-class contribution: 35%).
