Outline (in English)

Reading Kant's Critique of Pure Reason
― On the Immortality of the Soul ―

In the "Dialectic" of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason, he discusses the idea of "immortality of the soul". We will read the text rewritten in the second edition. The immortality of the soul has been a fundamental issue in Western philosophy since Aristotle's On the Soul (De Anima). By reading this text in detail, we will consider Kant's thought about the "immortality of the soul".

[Learning Objectives]
Students will acquire the following attitudes, skills, and knowledges regarding Kant's classical texts.
(1) To go back to the original text and uncover the thinker's thoughts themselves.
(2) To deepen their understanding of the subject by discovering, investigating, and considering questions.
(3) To formulate more persuasive opinions by referring to the opinions of others.
(4) To compare and contrast ideas from the text with other ones.
(5) To communicate the content of reports in a clear and correct manner.
(6) Participants translating a German text should be able to read and understand the original German text accurately.
(7) Participants should be able to understand the meaning of the translated words and sentences.

[Learning activities outside of classroom]

To review and deepen our understanding of the previous lesson. To understand the entire contents of the next text, and to investigate any questions or problems.
