Outline (in English)

The purpose of this class is to improve academic reading ability through the development of basic vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure analysis skills. Vocabulary development focuses on considering the context and structure to discern meaning, rather than strict translation between English and Japanese. Grammar and sentence structure instruction emphasizes the use and application of previous knowledge to read actual English. Using these skills, it aims to reinforce basic reading competence as well as rapidly and concisely summarize the gist of the content based on an understanding of paragraph structure.

Preparation is crucial in language learning. The students are required to understand the meaning of every word as well as the grammatical structure of every sentence. A quiz is given every two weeks to help build the vocabulary.

The final grade will be calculated based on the final exam (70%), quizzes (20%), and class participation (10%).
