Outline (in English)

(Course outline)
The purpose of this class is to improve academic reading ability through the development of basic vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure analysis skills. Vocabulary development focuses on considering the context and structure to discern meaning, rather than strict translation between English and Japanese. Grammar and sentence structure instruction emphasizes the use and application of previous knowledge to read actual English. Using these skills, it aims to reinforce basic reading competence as well as rapidly and concisely summarize the gist of the content based on an understanding of paragraph structure. Students will be also trained to improve their listening and reading skills with a whole film or sequences from it.
(Learning Objective)
By the end of the course, students will be able to :
- read scientific articles written by first-rate writers.
- develop their English vocabulary and expressions frequently used in the field of science and technology.
- extract the key information from a passage, without translating each sentence literally.
- understand how the main idea in one paragraph relate to the idea in another, based on processing information described in short conversations, announcements and narrations.
(Learning activities outside of classroom)
Students are expected to:
- spend at least two hours doing preparation and review of every course content.
- extend vocabulary more effectively by making their own vocabulary notebook.
(Grading Criteria/Policy)
Final grade will be calculated according to the following process:
13 weekly class assignments: 65%, term-end assignment: 25%, and in-class contribution: 10%.
Students will not be able to pass this course if they miss submitting more than 4 weekly class assignments except in extreme circumstances.
