Outline (in English)
This class aims at improving students’ academic reading ability through the acquirement and development of extensive vocabulary, accurate grammatical knowledge and sentence structure analysis skills. As for vocabulary development, this class focuses on comprehending and mastering a wide variety of vocabulary and useful expressions in the science and engineering fields. As for the instruction of grammar and sentence structure, it emphasizes the application of previous knowledge to read actual academic English materials rapidly and concisely.
By the end of the course, students should be able to attain the basic academic reading ability.
Before each class meeting, students will be expected to have read the relevant chapter from the textbook. Your required study time is at least one hour for each class meeting.
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following
Term-end examination: 50%, Assignments: 50%academic reading ability.

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
学術的な文章を読むために必要となる基本的な語彙力・文法力・構文解析力を養成することによって、英語の読解力の向上を図る。語彙のついては理工系の語彙を幅広く学習する。文法と構文解析については、既習知識を活用して学術的な英文を読む力を養う。また、英語の文章を迅速かつ正確に読み進めることができる力を養成することを目指す。

①アカデミックな内容の英文を正確に理解できる。
②アカデミックな内容の文章でよく使われる単語や表現を身につける。

テキストは、AIまでの道のりをわかりやすく記述した英語のエッセイです。１回の授業で１ユニットを読む予定です。初回の授業時に各ユニットの担当者を決め、各学期に１回は授業内で発表してもらいます。また、毎時間、各ユニットの英文の内容に関連する課題を各自やってもらいます。それに対するフィードバックは次の時間に行います。具体的には、皆さんが提出してくれた答案の中から良いものを取り上げて共有したり、理解が不十分な場合にはどこを修正すべきなのかについてコメントします。そうすることで英文の内容に関する理解を深めます。そのほかの細かい授業内容については初回の授業時にお話しする予定です。

１．テキストの指定箇所を毎授業前に必ず予習する。
授業中に本文の内容に関する発表をしてもらうことを予定している。その際には、テキストの内容を簡潔にまとめるだけでなく、英語の語法などで問題になりそうなところを指摘できるようにする。発表してもらった内容をベースに、皆で議論をできるようにする。
２．授業後は、授業内容を復習して理解を深める。
