Outline (in English)
The purpose of this class is to improve academic reading ability through the development of basic vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure analysis skills. You have to try to understand what the writer means, considering the context and structure of the article. Let's try to pick out the topic and get hold of the essence of the article. I'd like you to get accustomed to the logical development of an argument, so please try to read various articles in addition to those in the textbook.

学術的な文章を読む際の基本的な語彙力・文法力・構文解析力を養成し、リーディング力の向上をはかる。文脈や分構造を考慮して意味をとらえることができるようにする。
パラグラフごとの要点を抽出し、英文の論理構成や論理展開を理解することを目標に、平易な文をできるだけ多く読み、語彙力と読解速度の向上をはかる。
到達目標Goal
To read scientific articles using knowledge of basic vocabulary and grammar, and pick out important information, then make up summaries.

We practice reading articles, picking out key sentences, understanding the flow of paragraphs, and making up summaries.
You will be given vocabulary quiz for each unit of the textbook. the assignment will be given back in the next class and some good summaries will be shown as samples.

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
You will be assessed: vocabulary quiz and other assignments 70%
Final Reports 30%
You have to submit vocabulary sheet for each class. Take care not to fail to submit the assignments and try to build up scores to get good results.
If you don't attend the classes 4 or more times, you will not get the credit. When you come late for the class 3 times, it will be counted as one absence.

要点の抜出に関しては問題がないのに、自分の言葉でまとめをつくろうとすると、文の構造や構成がおかしくなってしまう、ということがよく起こります。
基本文型をしっかり押さえておきましょう。
ボキャブラリークイズは、語彙を広げるため、派生語をチェックする問題が出ています。基本語形を踏まえたうえで、文脈に沿って語形変化を考えていただければと思います。
