Outline (in English)
The purpose of this class is to improve academic reading ability through the development of basic vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure analysis skills. Vocabulary development focuses on considering the context and structure to discern meaning, rather than strict translation between English and Japanese. Grammar and sentence structure instruction emphasizes the use and application of previous knowledge to read actual English.
Using study questions, students demonstrate what they have learnt from independent reading of the assigned chapter while the instructor ensures their understanding of the key points. At the end of each chapter, students are given vocabulary exercises to check for understanding.
Final grade will be based on participation/performance during class (10%) and two review exams (90%).

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
本授業では、学術的な文章を読む際の基本的な語彙力、文法力、構文解析力を養成することによって、リーディング力の向上を図る。語彙については日本語との一対一対応による暗記に留まることなく、文脈や文構造を幅広く考慮に入れて意味をとらえる力へと発展させる。また文法と構文解析については既習知識を活用・応用して実際の英文を読む力を養う。
到達目標Goal
パラグラフの論理展開、文法・構文を確認しつつ、学術的エッセイの内容を正確に把握する能力を養います。さらに、学術的文章に頻出する語彙を文脈から理解し、練習問題を通して定着させることを目指します。

テキストの精読、大意把握を行うとともに、語彙・文法事項に関する学生の理解を確認します。小テスト・練習問題を適宜課し、語彙の定着を図ります。フィードバックは授業内、学習支援システム、メールを通して行う予定です。授業形態は対面授業を予定していますが、感染症の状況によりオンライン授業となる場合もあります。詳細は学習支援システムで伝達します。
