Outline (in English)
1[授業概要（Course outline）]
Students of this course will read popular topics on groundbreaking achievements in natural sciences, in the compiled textbook from Nature News website. To have a more valid understanding of the news topics, students will also deal with doing certain exercises and reading supplementary articles.
2[到達目標（Learning Objectives）]
By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
1. to have a certain ability to read a scientific article/essay based on their necessary vocabulary and expressions, steadily following its context.
2. to have more positive reading attitude toward scientific topics with deeper understandings and interests in the concerning fields.
3[授業時間外の学習（Learning activities outside of classroom）]
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content and handle with assignment tasks. Incidentally, students will be able to refer to the Japanese translation of introductory articles that will be handed beforehand at around the beginning of the term.
4[成績評価の方法と基準（Grading Criteria /Policies）]
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following
Term-end examination: 50%、unit assignments : 30%、in class contribution: 20%
(At least 60％ of all is required for grading.)

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
この授業では科学諸分野で一般にも注目される先端的研究成果を英語で読み、不可欠な語法や表現の理解を深め確認しながら、科学諸分野で、あるいはより広い意味でも、有用な英語読解力を養うことを目的とする。
到達目標Goal
英国の著名な科学雑誌 nature のウェブサイト記事 Nature Newsから，先端的かつ身近で興味をそそる科学関連ニュース・トピック（分野としてはバイオテクノロジー、化学、途上国問題[医療]、医薬など）を読む。そして内容理解や語彙・表現の問題に答え、さらに追補記事なども読みながら、当該各分野で、またより広く科学全般において有意義かつ有用な英語読解力を身につけたい。
この授業を履修することで学部等のディプロマポリシーに示されたどの能力を習得することができるか（該当授業科目と学位授与方針に明示された学習成果との関連）Which item of the diploma policy will be obtained by taking this class?

使用するテキストでは、毎unit、主題を導入する英語の文章（日本語私訳を配付予定）や記事本体に加え、各種練習問題も豊富に用意されており、授業では一つの主題（一つの unit）につき4回分くらいを費やしてじっくりと進めていく予定である。
授業は基本的には受講者の挙手による応答によって進められる。座席は指定とする。なお、各unit、少なくとも1回の課題が出される。課題については、提出期限後おそからず、全体に対する記述例の提示や確認のためのやり取りを行うことによってフィードバックする。この課題の実施・提出状況は平常点として算定される。

学期末試験
授業時間外の学習（準備学習・復習・宿題等）Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
本授業の準備・復習・宿題等の授業時間外学習は、4時間を標準とする。準備学習等によっても不明な個所はなるべく放置せず、必要に応じて質問に来て解決すること。なお、学期の始めに教科書（テキスト）学習予定各unitの「導入部（Introduction）」の日本語私訳を配付するので参考にするとよい。

参考書References
一年時に使用した英語辞書（電子辞書可）を持参すること。他には必要に応じて適宜文献を紹介、あるいは資料を配付する。新聞、雑誌（ネットを含む）の科学記事に目を通す習慣を付けるとよい。
成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
授業平常点点50％（挙手応答20％、課題30％）、学期末試験50％として、全体の60％以上の取得者に単位を認定する。
