Outline (in English)
This class reinforces the development of a rich vocabulary and accurate grammatical knowledge, and based on this knowledge, aims at the comprehensive development of the four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking). In the science and engineering fields, English is the common language. Technicians and scientists of the future will need the ability to comprehend and communicate in English to meet the need of society for high levels of English. In order to meet this need, this class emphasizes the development of basic, comprehensive skills and knowledge and the ability to apply them. Based on the needs of students, a variety of effective approaches will be used to strengthen basic English competency.
The goal of this course is to understand English without translating.
After each class meeting, students will be expected to read or solve the relevant subject(s) from the teacher. Your required study time is at least one hour for each class meeting.
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following
Term-end examination: 40%, in class contribution: 60%

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
本授業は、豊かな語彙力・正確な文法力の定着を図ると同時に、それに支えられた4技能（リーディング、ライティング、リスニング、スピーキング）の総合的な向上を目的とする。理工・生命系の分野では、英語が世界共通語になっていることを受け、将来の技術者・研究者には必要な専門知識を英語で受信・発信できる英語力に加え、社会の要求に応えられる高度な英語運用能力の習得が求められる。本授業では、そのための基礎力・総合力・応用力をつけるべく、学生の英語力を基にどのスキルに重点を置くか見極めた上で、効果的な教授方法を取り入れて実施する。
到達目標Goal
本授業では英語のスキルアップのため、読む、聞く、書く、話すを練習する。特に、読むについて、日本語に訳さず理解する方法を学んでいく。

読む、聞くを中心に学んでいくが、簡単な英文から少しずつレベルを上げていくつもりである。授業は、全員参加が基本で、各々が配布した紙にまとめをやる形式となる。また、前回回収したペーパーから幾つか選んで、答えの確認とポイント説明を行う。

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
平常点(60%)重視。試験(40%)を実施する。春学期の少なくとも前半がオンラインでの開講となったことにともない，成績評価の方法と基準も変更する．具体的な方法と基準は，授業開始日に学習支援システムで提示する。
