Outline (in English)
This class reinforces the development of a rich vocabulary and accurate grammatical knowledge while aiming to develop further the four language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking). In the science and engineering fields, English is the common language and in general society ther is an increasing need for the ability to comprehend and communicate in English effectively. Therefore, this course emphasizes the development of basic, comprehensive knowledge and understanding as well as better skills in applying these. A variety of effective approaches will be used to strengthen basic English competency in understanding written and spoken English as well as to improve the particular active skills for communicating in English.

授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives
本授業は、豊かな語彙力・正確な文法力の定着を図ると同時に、それに支えられた4技能(リーディング、ライティング、リスニング、スピーキング)の総合的な向上を目的とする。理工・生命系の分野では、英語が世界共通語になっていることを受け、将来の技術者・研究者には必要な専門知識を英語で受信・発信できる英語力に加え、社会の要求に応えられる高度な英語運用能力の習得が求められる。本授業では、そのための基礎力・総合力・応用力をつけるべく、学生の英語力を基にどのスキルに重点を置くか見極めた上で、効果的な教授方法を取り入れて実施する。

Practical problem solving in pairs for familiarization with the grammar and vocabulary of each unit text; blackboard presentations of cooperative results; individual assignments and recitations; in class personal consultations. Feedback will also be provided over the Hoppii system on both the Assignment Submission page for queries specific to one individual and on the Announcement page for queries of a general nature .

Forgotten or lost materials will be replaced only once at the start of each class by the instructor. In all other cases,students must supply their own replacements before class begins. Furthermore,photocopies of completed assignments will not be accepted.
