Outline (in English)

The purpose of this class is to develop the communicative competence necessary for effective participation in society and the world of work. The class aims to help students acquire a broad ability to communicate, starting from familiarity with daily conversation to explaining topics of students’ own interest or field of study, while deepening understanding of foreign cultures necessary for global citizens. Based on a firm foundation of basic skills, the class focuses on the future needs and interests of students as well as the ability to apply English to research and work in a setting of small, leveled classes for maximum effectiveness.
By the end of the course, students should be able to attain:
A. deepening understanding foreign cultures as well as Japanese culture
B. the communicative competence necessary for effective participation in society and the world of work
C. the basic ability to apply English to research
Before each class meeting, students will be expected to have read the relevant chapter from the textbook. Your required study time is at least one hour for each class meeting.
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following
Term-end examination: 50%, Assignments: 50%
