Outline (in English)

(Course outline)Theme: Introduction to modelling of the earth system and human action
Aim of this course is to acquire the basic knowledge concerning environmental problems and sustainability of the earth. The scientific approach is schemed with thermodynamics. In order to consider the problems, we need to understand the mechanism of the earth system including energy balance and material circulation on it. Feature of human action is required to be examined with relation to natural law on it.
This course mainly deals with the matter “energy and materials” which is analyzed through the law of thermodynamics appeared in the field of physics. We formulate the nature of the energy conversion and flow of materials on the earth. The earth system is modeled as one of the stationary-open systems. The techniques of the life-cycle assessment and the ecological-foot print are introduced here. In this course, we recognize that the concept is important for the first law of thermodynamics as energy conservation and the second one as quality consumption (i.e. entropy increment). This is valid not only for energy phenomena but also for material ones.
(Learning Objectives) At the end of this class, we are expected to have the concept of the mechanism of the earth system and human actions based on the thermodynamics. We are expected to understand the life-cycle assessment and the ecological footprint.
(Learning activities outside of classroom) We will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content for each class opened.
(Grading Criteria /Policy) The grade of the class is decided with Mid- and End-term reports 100%.
