Outline (in English)

-- This class aims to provide a more adequate understanding of today's situation called the "Anthropocene" by specifically examining the texts of European philosophy.
We will begin by reviewing the arguments of Chakrabarty, whose "Anthropocene" proposal received a great deal of publicity, and sharing his awareness of the problem. Why did human activity reach such a scale that it left traces in the geology? How can we resolve the situation where such vigorous activity brings about a crisis that bounces back on us?
Many thinkers and philosophers have found the cause of the crisis in the fact that we have come to believe that we transcend nature. The anthropocentrism that has permeated all of our thinking could be the root of all evil. Therefore, some argue that we should move away from anthropocentrism and take a posthuman perspective.
We will take up authors who have made important observations about nature, the environment, and human beings, and examine their thoughts. Through this process, we will try to understand where we stand today.
It should be noted however that depending on the interests and knowledge of the participants, we may sometimes choose topics that deviate from the syllabus.
-- The goal of this class is to help students hone their skills in talking about these issues and finding solutions through specific readings and discussions of European philosophy on "nature" and "environment.
-- Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend two hours to understand the course content. It will be essential to read the texts distributed during class.
-- Grades will be evaluated comprehensively based on the following factors.
Ordinary points: class participation, mini-tests, reaction papers (60%)
Final exam (40%)
The final exam will be given in person. If not possible, several tests may be given during the semester instead of the final exam. The modality of the test(s) will be announced during the first half of the semester.
