Outline (in English)

This course is designed to introduce students to a set of key questions and challenge in the anthropological study of the environment and development. Anthropology of environment is a study of different cultures and societies which are constituted of not only human but also various non-human entities such as artifacts, animals, ghost and spirit. With reference to ethnographic cases of development from around the world, including Laos, where the course instructor has conducted a long-term anthropological fieldwork, this course will provide students diverse anthropological approaches to understand various human/non-human relations and how they are changed and affected by developmental projects and to use these approaches to think about our own lives.
Grading criteria is based on individual goals and class participation: Active participation in web forum (40%), Commentary papers (40%) and Assignment (20%). Out-of-class learning is necessary for students, e.g. reading reference books and doing research for assignment. Students should plan to spend two hours out of class working independently every week before and after a class.
